NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Employees of WorldCom (WCOM) expect the company to hand out pink slips this week, insiders told The New York Post.

"The inevitable looks like it will be evitable this week," one executive, requesting anonymity, said. "If the heat was on [CEO Bernard Ebbers] before, it's turned into a maelstrom."

The New York Post, in its Monday editions, reported that employes told the paper that rumors of layoffs at offices around the company began to intensify last week. "The prevailing rumor is that the company began eliminating contractors last week and is quietly beginning cuts at various offices around the country," one WorldCom employee said.
