Actually, there is a better opportunity (energy wise) In Israel where, in principle, you could create a canal (underground part of the way) from the Med to the dead sea, use the 400 meters drop to create quite a lot of electricity, divert half the water to Eilat (all salt water) to compete with the Suez, and use the huge amounts of electricity to desalinate water, that is much more practical since the distance from the Med to the dead sea (or to a point at sea level above the dead sea) is not even 35/45 miles or so... the result of huge amounts of water evaporating near the dead sea might even create a local "tropical environment" with appropriate weather control systems...gaining more "sweet waters" for the region
