Despite the increasing speed at which terabytes of data can be scanned for relevant results, finding what you want on the Web, on your organization's intranet, or even on your own PC isn't getting much easier or faster, Dan Farber lamented last week. While major breaththroughs may not be around the corner, a new search program--BlackBall's BlackMagic--is promising faster and more efficient PC and network searches. In the wake of Microsoft postponing the release of WinFS until 2009, could BlackMagic fill the gap while we wait for Microsoft's end-to-end search tool? One key difference between the two technologies is that, whereas WinFS relies on a version of Microsoft's SQL Server, BlackMagic doesn't even use a database, thereby increasing performance through minimal overhead. But is it scalable? I spoke with BlackBall Chief Executive Bob Brown to find out more about what BlackMagic brings to the search table. http://zdnet.com.com/1606-2_2-5214217.html
