what i am looking for is this....

"what if anything can i do before calling a plumber to come out and replace the valve and copper discharge line?"

i agree that replacing the TPR valve would be a good plan. but this one has a soldered copper discharge line, and i can't solder a new one back on, so your instruction to "Remove the overflow pipe from valve" is where there's a catch, see? this discharge pipe has two 90 degree turns in it to make unthreading at the valve quite impossible.

what i'm looking for is your thoughts on the steps i've tried so far, or any others besides replacement.

and while we're on the topic of water heaters, a guy told me to avoid the mexican made ones, and that's exactly what i've got. any thoughts here?

:)
