Watching the tick I don't see massive short covering unless everyone is buying on an downtick. I see massive buy programs to kick us back up from time to time, but the tick appears bearish. Also, massive short covering would not have us peaking as early as 10:30. Looks to me like the program traders goosed it up early, and now have allowed the market to drift.
