You are telling me!

I remember most of the neighborhood kids leading a strange man calling himself "the mushroom man" into the woods. He wanted them to show him where mushrooms grew. Something didn't sit right with me (I was among the oldest). I told my mother, who called the police. They found him and a few of the neighborhood boys. He was arrested. Fill in the blanks.
