Microsoft has been there for a while.

Well maybe. Ever try to debug software with over 10 million
lines of code on Windows though?

For whatever reason, Sun systems running at much lower clock
speeds did large apps better than Windows (from my observations).
That's changed with faster x86 processors though.


Windows AMD64 will definitely take Microsoft to places where 32 bit Windows could not. 64 bitness takes away a huge reason for going with RISC dinosaurs. Microsoft is not participating in the 64 bit market except the token participation with Itanium version.


Slapping a few Opterons with 16 or 32 gigabytes of memory is
going to get you some really interested lookers as the entire
concept of disk drives goes out the window.

At any rate, I'm going to buy an A64 one of these days so I'll
get a little taste of what's to come.
