Spec, you're on the right track.

Solidworks is primarily used for 3D modeling of various parts which make up assemblies.

Then depending on the options or plug-ins purchased you can run simulations on the parts / assembles to see how they will hold up under certain conditions. What this means is you can save a ton of money by doing in house stress simulation rather then sending parts out for testing...

Also you can use Solidworks to spit out DFG/DFX/DWG files which can be input directly into the CNC machines for parts production.
