I remember reading somewhere (and I can't remember where) that it costs a hell of a lot of money to execute prisoners too, though. I guess that figure took into consideration the cost of all the appeals and the fees of all the personnel, legal and otherwise, who were involved in the prisoner's life prior to the execution.

There are a couple of prisons where the inmates are highly involved in the maintenance of the prison, an idea I like.
