well, i don't think police officers carry guns to shoot snakes and bats. they are for shooting people, which is what i said. i am not against law enforcement having handguns at all.
as for survival in the wilderness... not many muggers in the high country.
a rifle might come in handy if you want to play jeremiah johnson but pistols don't bring down elk, and tend to only piss off bears and mt. lions. Of course, mt. lions blitz attack so you would never fish your pistol out of your pack in time anyway.

For protecting your home.. a shotgun will stop someone probably better than a handgun. you can't miss with a shotgun, and they are less likely to be involved in child gun accidents.
