DENVER AREA CHAPTER (DAC)
SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON

The Denver Area Chapter (DAC) of the American Association of Blacks in Energy® (AABE), held its Fourth Annual Clarke Watson Scholarship Luncheon at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in downtown Denver on Tuesday, March 14, 2007. The event recognized math and science accomplishments of students in local area high schools. Dayleen Alcocer and Jerrell Johnson, both graduating seniors from Denver Public Schools received $2,000 each for scholarships to be paid to the university or college of their choice.

For the fourth consecutive year the scholarship luncheon was completely underwritten by sponsors that included Xcel Energy, CH2M Hill, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Suncor, and the Denver Weekly News. These sponsors made it possible for DAC to host without charging the luncheon guests, who included middle and high school students that attended with their counselors, advisers, and parents.

Mr. John Quincey Moaning, President and CEO of Black Diamond Ventures based in Houston, Texas was the keynote speaker. His company specializes in agriculture, biofuels, and commercial development with operations in Belize and the United States. He spoke of his humble beginnings and encouraged the youth to be confident in their technical skills and knowledgeable about their culture and history.

Amechi Nwankwo, both a 2006 DAC and a National AABE scholarship recipient gave the students words of encouragement. He told them that “College was hard, but you have to stick with it.” DAC President, Sheila Terry, attributes the success of the scholarship luncheon to the hard work of the DAC Educational Outreach Committee – Janice Brown (Chair), Peggy Rendon, Byron Tatum, and Sandy Steele. Special thanks to Syl Morgan-Smith, who works tirelessly to attain the sponsors and always does a fantastic job as MC.
