lucky, they will NOT wait till all labels are signed for the downloads.
Boy, everyone is so down here! It's going to be amusing to watch you all whoopin' an' hollerin' next week when they start the downloads. I understand this is still on track!
Now to keep everyone's expectations in check, I do not expect that the full UMG library will be available, based on the following:
- We know they will start with a server-based delivery vehicle. That means they must upload all the UMG songs to their servers. Let's assume that UMGs digital library is 2M songs (just a guess here). Let's also say that they can upload 15K songs per day (again a guess). That means it would take 133 days to upload the entire 2M songs. They have not had that much time.
So I expect that UMG has "prioritized" the music, based on popularity, artist deals, internal favorites -- whatever. The point is, that the uploads will be a constant, ongoing effort. That's why they have the "(Number of Songs) Uploaded Last Night" field on the website. So don't expect the entire catalog all at once.
The ease of moving the songs to an MP3 device (iPod or other) is a simple Drag-and-Drop sweep of the mouse. They "synchronization" process is what will keep the licenses active on the songs. I don't anticipate this to be any kind of problem at all. You can do this right now with Qtrax and any songs in your library (that were imported from iTunes, or from your hard disk). If you try this with a song downloaded from Qtrax, it won't work because the "right" to transfer the song is disabled. If anyone is interested (you techies) I can explain how to look at the rights given to any particular song.
I can't wait for next week to see the turn-around here on the board when everyone starts their downloading!
As always, KTF. I know it's been a long road, but KTF nonetheless.
That's what I'm going to name my boat - "Faithful One!"
