Doing some more research on AHCs trying to understand the potential market for DDI's Proteus for new installs and retrofits. Here's a paper from 2003 that sheds some light. Looks like winches on installation vessels would be a market as well.

ABSTRACT
As deepwater development continues to grow, the need of reliable installation methods increases. Reacting to demands of the market, an innovative active heave compensation system for deepwater installation has been developed. The system is built and successfully tested early 2003. This paper presents the active heave compensation system AHC 175/40/6200, which has been installed on the vessel "Normand Progress" and is presently operational offshore Africa for the installation of subsea
structures at water depths up to 2400 m.
INTRODUCTION
For the installation of subsea structures such as templates, manifolds and suction anchors in increasing water depths, installation contractors encounter limitations when using traditional, noncompensated, equipment. Phenomena that have been occurring are:
- excessive dynamic amplification of the load during lowering, with the risk of overloading or even rupture of the cable
- uncontrolled take-over of the load from an external supply vessel
- unstable situation when the load arrives at the bottom and needs correct positioning on the sea-bed
- cumbersome ROV assistance operations with respect to the moving load.
Heave compensated cranes, if present on the installation vessel, have limited capacity in view of load and wire rope length.
In case of the “Normand Progress”, it was decided to use an existing deck winch with high load capacity (up to 550 t) and large rope storage capacity (up to 2400 m, depending on wire rope diameter), which makes it very suitable for deep water application, when used in combination with a linear Active Heave Compensator. This set-up significantly increases the operating performance and capacity and presents a solution to the problems as identified above for the installation tasks foreseen for the coming future, using to a maximum extent the equipment already available on board of the vessel.
