All those EPA fights about slurry lagoons in the Carolinas suggest there are still plenty of pigs raised and slaughtered in the US. Yet it sounds from the article you posted that ALL the heparin is now coming from China.

Presumably whatever has to be done to the intestines is labor-intensive and / or unpleasant work = costly to do here. Maybe we have safety / quality regs that also make it costlier than if done in China.

I suspect we could remember how to make it here if we took heparin quality seriously. (Which tempts me to make a comment about the effect of race / class of most dialysis pts ... but I won't!)
