Re: That's a damn long list to pack in a SoC.I think ATI fully qualifies as having experience in "small stuff" , far more than Intel.
You're getting impressed by a laundry list. Nothing in that list is especially profound, hard, or innovative. It's more standard for the types of devices the chip is going into. Intel will have to get here, too, if they want to compete in cell phones, but I think it's smarter and easier for Intel to start with something that leverages highly from existing mobile PC markets, while going downward, than it would be to start from cell phones and work towards the experience of a PC.
If AMD were to start with ATI's Imageon and work up, they would have to start with putting a capable CPU core into their highly integrated product. It would essentially be a grounds up approach, and Intel will already have a robust solution.
Re: The irony is , Atom isn't suited for cellphones , at least not the volume segment.
Well, no duh, Savantu. That's what we've all been trying to tell you. But don't get confused, because Atom is a brand that will last for many years, and through many more architectural revisions. The first product, originally called Silverthorne, is clearly not for cellphones. But that doesn't mean that "Atom" won't get there in a few years.
