McCain should never have stuck his nose into North Carolina politics. But by decrying this ad, he shows his own limitations. If McCain wants to be 'nice', the campaign will be about who represents 'change', offers the most 'hope', that change will occur, and who has been in Washington the least amount of time, and therefore the least vested in our woeful situation. McCain loses in a landslide in that campaign. The country is going to suffer severely if a campaign is not going to examine the fitness of the various candidates to hold our highest offices, or the practical consequences of following their expressed policies.
I suspect that more than a few Democrats are wringing their hands over the hole they've dug, by not vetting Obama earlier and more thoroughly. But I suspect the Republicans are going to rue their selection of McCain as well. They must feel that they can't win anyway, given the public disaffection with both Iraq and the economy. Thus we are poised to elect a Marxist with an affinity for radical Islam, as President. The next four years will be a real test of the strenght of our Democratic traditions.
