The Isis-Merck nucleoside was a very early player in the NS5B polymerase field. There were plenty of scientific publications detailing it's activity and properties as far back as 2004, maybe earlier. Turned out to be toxic, as many compounds do. Merck then sat back and stayed out of the game until Array discovered ITMN-191 and they saw the hole in the IP making way for P2-P4 macrocycles off of the isoindoline carbamate. Schering had covered many of this type, but they weren't very potent or drug-like. or, apparently, comprehensive. MK-7009 is an interesting molecule structurally.
