Let's see how this game might play out. Z wants control of the company and Z is willing to push the price down pretty low to make the case that management has lost control of the stock value so Z should take over and will save the share price. Z is hedging his bets: He has a long position (actually his team does - he doesn't actually keep stock in his name) and now takes a short position as well. Long or short Z knows he will do fine - because the manipulation machinery "team" is at work.
If Z doesn't get his way then his "team" will continue to pummel the share price and he gets get a good return on his short position. On the other hand, if he gets his way, then he has the team cover the short position and reverses the engines and they push the price back up. Then v'oila he is a savior - at least temporarily until he brings in his men issues them stock, pumps the price up so 6 months later they can bail, and then lets the business collapse. Ooops that's the Pink Sheet story - we've already read that one.
So what does team A do? We'll save that story for later!
