If you had the money to drive a nice car you wouldn't be saying that.

Not everybody who has the money to drive a "nice car" is going to spend their money that way. Different people, different needs. And different priorities.

It's not unusual for a young man to put cars very high on the priority list. I felt the same way and still do to a certain extent.

Though I'd love to have a BMW 540i, there's no room for one in my life, and won't be until/unless the roads out here get paved and I decide I want one badly enough to shell out more money than I paid for my first house.

Consider what NW used to do (does?) for a living. With his comparatively conservative mindset regarding money, don't you find it plausible that he's probably accumulated a substantial chunk of it?
