HARARE (AFP) - Zimbabwe anxiously awaited Tuesday the first results from its presidential election as an official count show the opposition slightly ahead of Robert Mugabe's ruling party in the contest for parliament.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change retained a slight lead Tuesday over the ruling party in the official count of weekend parliamentary elections, with more than half of the results announced.

Following the latest announcements from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, the MDC had won 67 seats while President Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) had 64 of the 210 constituencies.

The situation is slightly complicated by a split in MDC ranks, with five of the newly-elected lawmakers belonging to a faction at odds with party leader Morgan Tsvangirai and instead loyal to former student leader Arthur Mutambara.

.. to those who don't know him, please, allow me to introduce Mr. Arthur Mutambara ..

After completing his doctorate at Britain's Oxford University he went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and became professor at several other universities in the United States. Unlike many African academics, Mutambara was always determined to return to Africa.

Over the weekend he arrived back in Zimbabwe from Johannesburg where he heads up an African scientific institution for talks with leaders of one faction of the MDC. Some in this faction want him to make himself available as a candidate for the top job, as president.

Late Monday he confirmed his re-entry into Zimbabwe politics, and said he hoped the enthusiasm of a new leadership which he said was untainted by current disagreements, would make unification of the two factions of the MDC possible.

According to the MDC's constitution any one of the 12 provinces would have to nominate him and authorised delegates to the party's congress next Sunday will vote for a new president.

.. and further down, Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai, umm, possibly literally .. he looks less establishment as he didn't want to take part in the elections, so, a constitution problem .. kind of a banana split .. :)

The faction of the MDC lead by party president Morgan Tsvangirai declined to comment on Mutambara's sudden re-entry into Zimbabwe's opposition political scenario.

Tsvangirai's faction is holding its congress next month, but he is certain to be the only candidate for the top job.

The MDC split last October over adherence to the party's constitution.

Tsvangirai said that even though a narrow majority of party executives voted to participate in the first ever elections for a senate last November, the MDC should not take part.

Most of the MDC's top leaders rebelled against him, saying he had defied the party's constitution.

The party split into two factions with both declaring themselves to be authentic.

Transcript of 'Hot Seat' with Topper Whitehead
on how Mugabe rigged 2002 Presidential Election
Violet Gonda, SW Radio Africa
July 31, 2007

Elections are expected next year and already complaints of irregularities are beginning to emerge. Last week an opposition official was arrested for taking pictures of chaos at a voter registration center in Harare. The opposition and independent electoral bodies have criticized the way the registration exercise has been conducted and it is feared that the slow pace and inadequate publicity given to this exercise will exclude many people from voting. This is one of the ways that elections are rigged in Zimbabwe.

Violet Gonda: My guest on the programme Hot Seat is Topper Whitehead, an elections expert. He was illegally deported from Zimbabwe in 2006 after exposing how the Mugabe government had blatantly rigged the 2002 presidential election and subsequent elections. His investigations took 3 years, 7 court cases and 2 situations of contempt of court on behalf of the Registrar General Tobiawa Mudede. In 2005 and 2006, state security agents confiscated equipment designed for the first time, to expose how the 2002 presidential election was rigged. Although he lives in exile in South Africa Topper is a key witness in the 2002 Presidential challenge with a detailed affidavit in the high court proving the rigging.

Violet: Welcome on the programme Topper.
.. and from the bottom of the biggie ..

Violet: Did you know who was behind this huge stripping of assets?

Topper Whitehead: Well, it all went down the line, you know. Its part of how the copper is a valuable commodity. Where it goes down the line, I can give you all, that was a long time ago, I’ve got all my notes on that I put to bed when Chris was killed. It was just going that I know, as Manager of a big parastatal, that the government influence on corporations that is not in the best interests of the company. And it’s for personal gain up the line. Where it actually goes to, I wouldn’t know, but it’s certainly not to where it should go.

Violet: Right.

Topper Whitehead: And, the proof is there, Mhangura Copper Mines is now defunct. .........
