I make the same version I loved as a kid- just canned creamed corn and baby lima beans. I mix two cans with one pack frozen limas. No tomatoes in ours. My children have very sophisticated tastes- and they will eat just about anything,( including whole baby squid salad- for example), but I never thought of succotash as one of their sophisticated tastes.
