The sanctions under these two amendments are very repressive and can prevent all major economic and military US assistance to Pakistan.

The problem is if we prevent all major U.S. economic and military assistance to Pakistan there are other countries who will step up to the plate. We are not quite as dominant as we once were; it’s no longer lonely at the top. Musharraf is going to play his position for all its worth and let the U.S. and China or whoever bid for Pakistan’s favor.

I suspect the U.S. strategy in Pakistan has in part to do with containing China and probably India.

Glad to see Ackerman got right on this.

China has announced it will provide a $12 million interest-free loan to Pakistan in order for Pakistan to boost their army.
