chipguy, there are many labs buing SGI for many years. This time they bough Altix because it's the best SGI has. It has nothing to do with Itanium.

LOL, you are quite amusing. The Altix is the best SGI
has but it has nothing to do with the processor? What
is it then? The color of the bezel? The cool name?

Compared to the Origin series the Altix changes the
instruction set, programming toolchain, and the OS.
That is about as disruptive as you can get. Yet SGI
already has over 200 customers for it. Why? It kicks
everyone else's butt in HPC around the block for a
reasonable price. And that has *everything* to do
with IPF.
