Diesel, In two cases I left the company. (1990&2003) In two other the company was sold to a new company and because I was in management may 401K ended and I could either roll it over into the new 401K or roll it over into an IRA. (1998&2002??)

I chose to roll over into an IRA because there are always more restrictions on a 401K. The union people because of their contract stayed with their current 401K I believe.

All of this activity was with one original company but that shouldn't matter. I don't believe that you can just quit the 401K and transfere it, you must leave or the company is sold, ect.
