The precedent issue is that the unborn have been granted legal, "personhood" status. They will use this precedent to broaden the legislation's application. Federal recognition of "personhood" is a key precedent in the ideologues assault on reproductive rights.

edit: The Laci & Conor legislation was a Catch 22 for even pro-choice legislators. The medical examiners aged Laci's fetus at between 33 and 37 weeks gest age. Laci's smiling face saturated the media for over a year as have images of her distraught family. Laci's story is a tragedy. It would have been hard to vote against "Laci & Conor." And any legislator who did vote against Laci and Conor would have been vilified as soft on crime. Political suicide, especially these days.

Laci & Conor provided the perfect vehicle for far right ideologues to advance their true agenda.
