nas,
Apparently the GeForce FX line from the lowly 5200 all the way to the highest 5950 use fan speed control and underclock on the fly if the heat gets too nasty.
So if you are just typing a GeForce FX should turn the fan off.
Actually, the card I have (well actually someone else in our office has) is fanless. I am just concerned about the heat, since everything in the system runs between 42 and 65C, CPU and "system" (apparently chipset) run at some 48 and 52 and a power supply at 60 to 65. This is way higher then what I am used to seeing in normal desktop systems (this is small Shuttle XPC).
Anyway, I am not complaining, since I ran the system at "Ultra-Quiet" mode.
Thanks for the links. GeForce 5200 is an overkill for non-3D work, but someone posted on SI that this is the cheapest card with supports of DirectX 9.0, which is probably a good thing to have for the future, since I was buying a discrete card.
BTW, thanks for the links and hints. I remember seeing the sliders on either the driver or some utility from my card manufacturer (Gainward) when I installed it initially, but later on I have used drivers directly from nVidia, which did not have it. Maybe I will try their system utility to see if they have it there.
