Yes, it was. My friend was beaten frequently with 2x4s, expecially after the famous one finger salute they all sent, he was never the same after for sure. Funny thing was he took duty for someone else for the "short" voyage, it last 11 months. One more reason to believe the old military saying, "NEVER VOLUNTEER for anything".
