But ... if the parameters of the data collection and presentation are constant, it is useful. And the energy Chicken Littles seem oblivious to the notion of looking at prices in relative dollar terms. Even if you don't believe that energy is a smaller part of total consumer spending than it was in prior decades, at least you know that gas is cheaper on a constant dollar basis than it has been in the past. And it should be pretty easy to see the notion that gas/energy costs are no bigger a relative part of personal consumption costs, as energy costs (until very recently) have not grown at the rate of personal income.
