China is making massive inroads in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, three countries that border China.

China to write off $18 mn debt of Afghanistan

BEIJING : China will write off a $18 million debt that the Afghan government owes to it and Beijing may announce more aid to the war-torn neighbour during next week's donor nations' conference in Berlin .

"This is a friendly gesture from the Chinese government and the Chinese people," Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan , Sun Yuxi was quoted as saying in Kabul .

According to Sun, the Chinese government and the Afghan transitional government have reached an agreement to write off a the about $18 million that the then Afghan government borrowed in 1965.

At the Berlin conference, the Chinese government will announce new plans to provide the Afghan authorities with more aids, Sun said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing will head a delegation to attend the donor nations' conference for Afghanistan in Berlin from March 31 to April 1, the foreign ministry announced here this week.

China has actively participated in the process of peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan , foreign ministry spokesman, Kong Quan said.

During the meeting, Li will expound the views and stand of the Chinese government on the Afghan issue, announce assistance measures to Afghanistan and confer with certain state leaders and foreign ministers on major international and regional issues, he said.
