US sales of prescription drugs grew only 4% in 2007 (down from 9% in 2006), the slowest growth rate in a long time. This occurred despite the fact that 2007 growth in US prescription volume (3%) was close to the average of the past six years.
Why the sharp slowdown in sales growth? Below are the reasons cited by IMS. (The first item re Medicare Part D refers to the one-time boost in 2006, when Part D went into effect.)
IMS forecasts a modest improvement to 4.5% for US sales growth in 2008.
