My bet is that the Hammer core cost to make is between $100 and $150, closer to $150. This way AMD may not sell anything below $180 without losing money. They rather sell 3 $55 Bartons instead. Btw, why Barton should cost $55? In face of Prescott troubles Barton should not cost less than $60, especially when supply is shrinking. They just can't sell more than 1.5 million chips with price over $200.

Another two explanations. The Opterons have pretty low yield but AMD need to make quite a lot, so they make 1 Opteron instead of 3 A64's.
