ExxonMobil develops deepwater equipment qualification standardization

HOUSTON -- Consistent practical methods for defining equipment qualification and testing requirements can result in improved reliability and facilitate project execution, said C.S Horan, ExxonMobil Development Co. at the 20th Deep Offshore Technology conference and exhibition on Feb. 13 in Houston.

"Qualifications for service are critical," Horan said, "and industry standards do not consistently cover qualification. We don't have a consistent approach." (This is the door Deep Down will kick in, and provide the industry with the equipment that exceeds industry standards.)

ExxonMobil has developed an approach to equipment qualification using datasheets based upon existing industry methodology and DNV processes.

By using this standard equipment qualification format, operator and vendor interfaces can be efficiently managed as well as provide opportunities to component level standardization, control cost growth, delivery schedule reduction, and facilitate lessons learned capturing, according to Horan.

"Qualification testing needs to be well-designed, ahead of the award," Horan said. "This proposed qualification process provides a proactive reliability enhancement framework modeled after proven industry system."

Do what is “right”, never do what is “easy”. And do this "all" of the time, not just some of the time.
