I tried to do a statistical study of scans once but I found the the "success factors" kept changing from day to day. That was with smallcapcenter.com and it was hard to do because you can't check for a condition that was true in the past.

I may try again with stockcharts.com at some point, because your question just reminded me that there IS a way to check for events that took place in the past using their advanced scan.

The way to do it is to do a scan for a group of stocks that had some particular thing happen a few days ago, like [4 days ago close < 4 days ago SMA(10,close)] and [3 days ago close > 3 days ago SMA(10,close)] would check for a moving average crossover 3 days ago. The way to check the success rate is just to see how many stocks come up from that scan, and then check to see how many of those actually performed well based on some criteria, like up more than 50% or something.

Hmmm, I'll have to think some more about that one of these weekends...
