Motorola To Consider Separating Mobile Phone Unit

Motorola Inc. (MOT), apparently bowing to pressure to consider breaking apart the company, said late Thursday that it may separate its struggling cellphone division from its other businesses.
Such a move would be aimed at turning around a unit that produced just over half of Motorola's revenue in 2007, down from two-thirds of its revenue in 2006, and improving the value of the company's shares.
Shares recently gained 11% to $12.78 in after-hours trading, after rising 1.9% to close Thursday's regular session at $11.50.
