Of course, there is an element of that involved, but keep in mind that the "seedings" were based upon past performance. So, #1 vs #64, #2 vs #63, etc. However, since we have 80 competitors, there has to be 16 matchups in an elimination round. The people that did not get byes (meaning everyone after #48 and those who haven't participated in enough PSLs to qualify) were seeded as well based on the same criteria.
In one sense, it isn't all that different from a sports tournament. The seeding is based upon performance, but you might end up against some higher seeded team that gelled at the right time and ends up running the table. Or you might have your most likely opponent beaten every round so that you end up playing weaker opponents than you should have based on seedings. Of course, the difference here is that we RE-SEED after each round based on performance within this contest.
