Paul, I would argue that Opteron's model number is the most intuitive of their set. When you consider the desktop model numbering scheme, it has been the most inconsistent of anything AMD has done. It is sometimes conservative, sometimes aggressive, it sometimes agrees between mobile and desktop, and sometimes does not, it sometimes compares well with other AXP parts, and other times is clearly set to the Pentium 4 equivalent for marketing reasons. I have had multiple diatribes about the inconsistency of AMD's desktop approach. At least Opteron's model scheme doesn't pretend to look like something else to confuse the customer. Of all the options for Intel to use, a 3-digit number with the first digit grouping the class of product seems to be the best solution. Maybe AMD will have to follow Intel this time, and transition the rest of their lines to a common scheme.
