12 Killed in Suicide Bombing at Shiite Mosque in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Twelve people were killed and 25 others were wounded, three of them seriously, when a suicide bomber detonated explosives on Thursday in a Shiite Muslim mosque in Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, police and hospital officials said.

CIA did not pull out of the jihadi program after the Soviet withdrawal, leaving it solely in the ISI's hands. .. a massive trail of evidence which proves that all the Islamist extremists who were trained .. to undermine Kashmir, Bosnia, Chechnya, Kosovo, Egypt, the US and England .. not all Pakistan's doing.

The attack took place in Mohalla Jangi, a congested neighborhood of Peshawar. The bomber, who was believed by the government to be a teenage boy, was stopped by police near the entrance to the mosque, according to Brig. Javed Iqbal Cheema, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

He fired two gunshots before detonating explosives. However, a private television network, Express News, quoted a witness, Sher Gul, as saying that the bomber, clad in a black dress, blew himself up inside the prayer hall.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack.

The bombing came during Muharram, the annual festival for Shiites, when tensions run high between them and Sunnis.

Pakistan has seen a violent wave of terrorist attacks in recent years, blamed by the government on Islamic extremists and tribal militants based in the semiautonomous tribal areas straddling the border with Afghanistan. Suicide attacks and other bombings have increased sharply in the country over the last year.

Most of the attacks have been carried out by Islamic militants against the government, and the violence has not generally been between Shiite and Sunni groups. But extremist Sunni groups have in the past directed violence against Shiite worshipers during Muharram.

The latest attack also took place two days before the Shiite religious festival of Ashura, commemorating the killing of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad — an event that cemented the split between Shiites and Sunnis.

The government had warned of possible attacks around Ashura. It had declared 35 districts across the country as “sensitive,” and said they could possibly witness terrorist attacks this month.

The suicide bombing occurred on the eve of the anniversary of a similar bombing last year in Peshawar that left 15 people dead, most of them policemen.

Local television news networks showed the charred walls of the prayer hall, which was scattered with debris and body parts. The injured were immediately rushed to a hospital in Peshawar. Soon afterward, Shiite mourners took part in a procession near the mosque condemning the blast.

On Wednesday, hundreds of Islamic militants attacked a paramilitary fort in the restive South Waziristan tribal region in northwest Pakistan, killing 22 soldiers and taking several hostage. .. Ismail Khan contributed reporting from Peshawar.
