AMD and Intel Current Channel Lineup
I just wanted to look at Newegg, and look at the product stack available today.
This first bucket clearly contains the value line processors. Intel only competes here with Celeron 400 series parts, based on a single Conroe core with 512KB of L2 cache. Compared to similarly priced AMD processors, I think Intel's position here is very weak. They really need to start offering those dual core Celerons, if nothing else, then to at least compete with those dual core parts that AMD has listed at fire sale prices. It's amazing that they are still selling 90nm Windsor cores at these prices. I guess it's either sell at a loss, or write off a charge. For now, this appears to be the market where AMD will brag about share gains and record volumes....
Intel is somewhat stronger in this segment, at least as far as price/performance goes. I would expect a 2.2GHz Allendale core to perform nicely against a 2.5GHz Brisbane, for example. However, there is a rather large gap between the $95 price point, and the $120 price point where you will not find any Intel processors, and AMD seems to be taking advantage of this. I hope to see Intel strengthen their position here with upcoming price moves. I know that Intel is supposed to have a Core 2 4000 series part in the $115 range, but perhaps popularity has caused Newegg to charge higher prices on it. Intel needs to work on these issues by supplying more of these parts to the market. Hopefully, 45nm production will help.
Intel is fairly uncontested here. These last few Windsor parts are far from competitive, due to the much higher power dissipation and uncompetitive 90nm process. And you can see that the overclocking headroom on the lower bin Allendale parts is causing a very strange price inversion here. Either way, I think Intel will own this price range this quarter and next, especially with upcoming Wolfdale parts.
AMD finally has an entry into the elite pricing segment, but it's weak, and the broken Agena cores have fallen to the bottom of this price range. As Intel ramps Yorkfield, I expect Intel to fully keep AMD out of this segment.
