The masses and the politicians only seem to respond to pain. In words, $6 gasoline would make the masses scream and then those screams would be responded to by the politicos. Are we all just that apathetic or is it a plan to make the oil companies even wealthier?
Let's see...we could employ 10's of thousands of Mexicans in Mexico which would A. give them income, B. perhaps slow illegal immigration, and C. perhaps dampen the drug trade if even slightly.
As more ethanol is blended with gas, we would reduce the amount of imported oil which would have a positive influence on the balance of trade and perhaps help the dollar even modestly.
Making ethanol from corn drives up the price of beef among other products. I don't have anything against corn farmers, but they are relatively few compared to the general population here. And, I don't think they are really going to suffer. There is plenty of demand for corn both here and abroad.
Ethanol will never replace oil, but it sure can lessen it's consumption domestically.
