Remember Danny Woodhead of tiny Chadron State in Nebraska? He was involved in one of the most exciting games in N.C.A.A. playoff history yesterday, when Chadron State rallied from a 29-point deficit to defeat visiting Abilene Christian, 76-73, in three overtimes.
The teams combined for 1,369 yards and 21 touchdowns in a little more than four hours, and the 149 points they scored were a Division II playoff record. According to this story on Chadron State’s Web site, some of the fans who left after the third quarter, when Chadron trailed by 49-20, returned to the stadium after hearing radio reports of their team’s rally. There was still a lot to see.
Chadron drove 92 yards in nine plays in the last two minutes of regulation, forcing overtime when Joe McLain hit Joel Schommer with a 17-yard pass with 17 seconds left. Schommer’s touchdown tied the score, 56-56.
From The Associated Press:
The teams traded touchdowns in the first two overtimes before Chadron’s defense came up with a stop to force Matt Adams’s 21-yard field goal.
Woodhead rushed 13 yards on the first play of Chadron’s possession, then McLain went up the middle for the winning touchdown. He punctuated the 12-yard run with a somersault into the end zone.
“Right when they sent out their field goal team we knew we had won it because our offense was playing so well moving up and down the field,” Chadron State safety Paul Schweger said. “If we could stop them a little bit and hold them, our offense could score. Everybody believed.”
For those who understand no explanation is needed, ...For those who don't none will.
