Giant Tiger store moves to Potsdam

Two months ago Hacketts Department Stores opened its fourth location in St. Lawrence County.
Now a Canadian retailer will join Hacketts in their building.
"When we originally sub-leased the building in August we knew the building was physically too large for our needs so we looked into subleasing to another party,” said Norman Garrelts, CEO and President of Hacketts.
That other party is Gordon Reid, the founder of Canada's Giant Tiger Stores Limited.
Giant Tiger has 129 locations in Canada.
Although it has its own identity, the store will be run and managed by Hacketts.
In a statement released by Reid Tuesday, he said, "I have known the Hackett family since 1987 and I am very pleased that we were able to form this partnership with such a long standing and trusted retail company."
The new store promises to bring new employment opportunity into the area.
"Right now we're looking to add forty to forty-five new employees to this building…later there will be an announcement of a job fair, just as when we opened Hacketts Store,” said Hacketts store manager Rich Finnerty.
The new store will have its own entrance and will offer discount merchandise and grocery items.
According to Garrelts, the combination of these two retailers will mean a selection equal to or better than a big box store.
Pat and Keith Morgan, residents of Parishville, were supportive of the new store.
"Yeah, definitely we need more shopping in Potsdam and I think with Hacketts being on one end and this being on the other its going to be just great,” said Pat.
The Giant Tiger store will move in where Discount City is currently located in late March.
In the meantime, Giant Tiger has scheduled a job fair on January 6th and 7th - at Snell Hall on the Clarkson campus.

Giant Tiger is opening a store in Potsdam - its first store in the United States.
The Canadian retailer runs 130 stores north of the border.
The store will be run in conjunction with Hacketts.
"Giant Tiger is known for having everyday low prices and they give a great mix of products from grocery to basic items and they do it very well, Hacketts is the quality and service part of it, so they compliment each other very well without stepping on each other,” said Giant Tiger Store Manager Rich Finnerty.
Giant Tiger opens its doors Saturday morning at 8:00 am.
