But options are also a waste of capital.

I rather doubt a trader in options ever considers the money he plays as being "capital". It's his ante. Options are just a different table in the casino. He plays it, perhaps, in just the hope it may become "capital" - currency accepted at higher stake tables in a less risky, more reputable part of the casino.
