They were brought in as an advisor to the court way after there were any assets left insofar as business operations (that they themselves would be interested in acquiring)....

This along with the fact that National City Bank transferred their GWOW stock to another party (unknown party at this point) about the same time is very interesting. Keep in mind that National City's subsidiary "NatCity special situation investment banking group" also was an advisor to the court.

So why did they join the BK fray so late in the game (nearly 6 years later) when only the shell disposition was left in question ?

None of this is speculation, those facts are revealed in the public court filings as shown in the Ibox links..

Whatever is going on, it likely involves a heavy hitter.. these are large acquisition and advisory firms that are very professional and they don't get involved in small transactions...
