DON'T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE JOBS NUMBERS GAME THIS WEEK

February 3, 2004 -- THIS is a very dangerous week for the stock market. Stocks yesterday had their typically strong Monday rally before fading at the end of the day. As I've been documenting in this column, triple-digit Dow gains have been commonplace of late for the first day of the week, thanks to professional traders' golden push. But here's the problem. Or, I should say, problems. This coming Friday, Washington will announce the employment report for January. And it'll take a lot of alchemy by the pros to get Wall Street past this trap.
The "experts" are expecting about 175,000 new jobs to have been created last month. And they also think the unemployment rate will remain at 5.7 percent.
