Actually no... the miltary is very much authoritarian. Obedience to leaders and so on...

Socialism is very left wing... more to the left than democracy, although there's a little blurring of the apples / oranges line there. Socialism is an economic principle more than a political one, opposite of capitalism as it were. People often use the term interchangeably with communism but again one deals with politics, the other with economics. In today's world they are more blurred than ever, as the moneyed class develops the ability to control politics and dialogue as well as production, but as to your original question... the military is top down. You don't get a vote there.
