Meditech Pharmaceuticals Inc. Announces: Clinical Trial Web Site to Open for Screening of Cold Sore -- HSV-1 -- Study Applicants

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Dec 17, 2001 (BW HealthWire) -- Meditech Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTC BB: MDCH) Monday announced that the clinical trials Web site at Boston University has made information available regarding the upcoming Meditech cold sore (HSV-1) clinical trials.
The Web site address for the clinical trials is http://icrc.bumc.bu.edu/. The trials will commence pending Independent Review Board (IRB) approval of several minor changes made to the formulation, the Web site and documents relating to the trials. People who wish to be notified when enrollment starts will be able to leave their contact information.

Registration of applicants will begin as soon as the changes are approved by the IRB.

Meditech shareholders are being asked not to apply for admission to the study so as to preserve the complete and total impartiality of the study. The company will make arrangements to accommodate its shareholders separately from the study.

Meditech Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gerald Kern stated, "We have waited a long time for this process to begin and are very pleased that we have reached this point. It is very important that the results of this study be totally independent and as a result we have made the decision to not enroll Meditech shareholders, employees or affiliates as patients. We will arrange to accommodate them outside of the clinical trials."

Separately, Meditech has been asked, by another agency, to submit two of its compounds for screening against vaccinia and cowpox, viruses that are in the same genus as the smallpox virus (orthopoxvirus). The objective of the screens is to determine whether or not the compounds show potential for use against the smallpox virus.
