A flock of sheep and goats moves across a hillside covered with grass and patches of colored flowers. The entire area has been uplifted geologically, and water has cut the river valley and made deep gullies in the older surface. Ferric oxides (rust stains) in clay exposed by erosion on slopes account for the red colors in the distance. At the top of the picture is a gently rolling plateau which has not yet been cut by the erosion stimulated by the more recent uplift. The patterns at the top are from fields plowed in earlier seasons on the old peneplane surface.
