If they're wondering why nitric oxide supposedly failed to live up to expectations, it might be because they were researching nitrous oxide (the laughing gas they mention).

With a Nobel behind it and a very important role in vascular tension, i would think nitric oxide is the kind of disappointment that most research labs could live with!
