A study of ancient eggshells and teeth supports the controversial theory that early humans caused the extinction of many of Australia's huge animals by setting brush fires.
The study also showed why it sometimes does not pay to be a picky eater -- the giant birds that were more choosy about their diets perished, while the indiscriminate emu survived ........

3. .. CHINAdaily .. Great Barrier Reef corals mostly dead by 2050, says Australian study
SYDNEY : The brightly-coloured corals that make Australia's Great Barrier Reef one of the world's natural wonders will be largely dead by 2050 because of rising sea temperatures.
Instead of the rich environment depicted in the recent movie Finding Nemo, the coral reef will be bleached out and replaced by ordinary seaweed, costing the tourism industry billion of dollars, the report into the impact of global warming says.
Authors Hans and Ove Hoegh-Guldberg — the head of Queensland University's marine studies centre and his economist father — spent two years examining the effects of rising sea temperature on the reef for Queensland tourism authorities and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature.
Their 350-page report found no prospect of avoiding the "chilling long-term eventualities" of coral bleaching because greenhouse gases were already warming the seas as part of a process that would take decades to stop.
"Coral cover will decrease to less than five percent on most reefs by the middle of the century under even the most favourable assumptions," the report said. "This is the only plausible conclusion if sea temperatures continue to rise."
Warmer sea waters make corals suffer thermal stress, eventually making them bleach and die. ............"
dead coral .. DARN .. it seems real dead .. we are oxymorons.

4. Raging bushfires kill 8 in Australia
(Agencies) Updated: 2005-01-11 00:07
At least eight people including two children died as bushfires fanned by searing temperatures and high winds raged through parts of South Australia state yesterday, threatening towns and destroying properties.
Firefighters are dwarfed by the towering flames of bushfires on the South Eastern Freeway on the outskirts of Adelaide, Australia, yesterday. At least eight people are confirmed dead. [AFP]
Police said eight people had been confirmed killed, but a number of others were still unaccounted for and the toll could rise. At least one firefighter was taken to hospital suffering from bad burns.
An adult and two children died as the fire swept a farming property near the tiny township of Wanilla on South Australia's rugged Eyre Peninsula.
Two adults died nearby as the car in which they were believed to have been travelling was engulfed by flames and another three people were found burned to death in a vehicle near the seaside township of Poonidie near Port Lincoln.
"The latest death toll has reached eight," ...............

NUMBER 2. ON THE LIST WAS .. Hungarian heatwaves kill 500

The heatwave in central and southern Europe killed an estimated 500 people in Hungary last week, the country's chief medical officer has announced.
Ferenc Falus says that during the week from July 15 to July 22, the heat in central Hungary "contributed to the early death of 230 people, which nationally means about 500 deaths".
But he added that the toll could have been worse if it was not for "the hard work of health workers".
Temperatures regularly reached 40 degrees Celsius or more this week, hitting the all-time high of 41.9 degrees on Friday in the southern city of Kiskunhalas.
For a week, Hungary has been on third-degree heat alert, the highest level, which has never before been applied in the country.
"Calls for ambulances increased by some 30 per cent over the past week, but during record high temperatures on Friday, this went up to 50 per cent," emergency services spokesman Pal Gyorfi said.
"What we are seeing is that older people are having a tougher and tougher time dealing with the heat."
Fires were reported across Hungary, with firefighters called out 3,000 times in the past week alone to quell blazes.
This is nearly three times the weekly average of 1,200 calls, Catastrophe Defence Agency director Attila Tatar says.
Mr Tatar says no one was injured in the fires.
City officials in Budapest have been distributing thousands of water bottles to help residents battle the heat, while the Government has told citizens to stay indoors between 10am and 3pm (local time), preferably in air-conditioned places.
The weather also caused minor delays in the train and tram services, with the punishing heat bending rails in several places.
Parts of the country are still experiencing 40 degree temperatures, but the weather is expected to cool down in the coming days.
Meanwhile across Europe the extreme weather conditions continued.
Britain was experiencing its worst flooding in living memory, while in the Balkans people were warned to stay indoors to avoid searing temperatures with deaths reported in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Romania.
