mkwmike,

There are a number of delivery vehicles that researchers at CYGX and various gene therapy companies have been developing.

A partial list of delivery vehicles:

liposomes
viral vectors
dendrimers
nano particles
antibody fragments
peptides carriers

All of these are in various experimental stages.

CYGX's approach has been to begin with mechanical methods. That is physically applying the constructs to the cells. That's why their initial focus has been on skin conditions - herpes, dermatitis, alopecia, topical infections.

Also they are pursuing aerosols for lung cancer - again getting the DNA construct physically, mechanically right in contact with the target cells.

These applications present the lowest scientific and regulatory barriers to getting a product to market quickly.

Targeted vectors are the holy grail, and many millions are being spent on research by the whole field of RNA/DNA based medicine. Progress is being announced virtually every week on some front.

The journal of Gene Therapy publishes new papers on target vectors for DNA constructs and transgenes all the time.

Try Googling "gene therapy" and "vector" and you'll find thousands of references, if you want to pursue the matter more deeply.
